Missing teeth are not only embarrassing but can cause other oral health issues as well. When a tooth is missing, the surrounding teeth can shift out of place, causing bite problems and misalignment. Additionally, bone loss can occur at the site of the missing tooth. Bone loss can lead to further tooth loss as well as facial sagging and premature aging. At Burba Dental Partners, dental implants are artificial tooth roots that provide a permanent base for replacement teeth. They are made of titanium and other materials compatible with your body. The implants are placed into the jawbone, where they become fused with the bone to provide a sturdy base for the artificial teeth. Once the implants are in place, the replacement teeth are attached.

Types of Dental Implants

Endosteal Implants

These implants are placed in the jawbone by our dentist in Salem, MA, and are the most common type of implant used today. They consist of a metal post surgically inserted into the jaw, and a dental crown is placed on top of the post. The crown is custom-made to match the patient’s natural teeth.

Subperiosteal Implants

Another type of dental implant is the subperiosteal implant. This type of implant is not placed in the jawbone but on the gum line. It consists of a metal post surgically attached to the jawbone below the gum tissue. A dental crown is then placed on top of the post. Subperiosteal implants are not as common as endosteal implants but may be a good option for patients who do not have enough bone in their jaws to support an endosteal implant.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are the only restoration that preserves natural bone. Without stimulation from the roots of your teeth, your jawbone will deteriorate over time. This can cause your face to appear sunken in on itself, making you look older than you are. With implants, however, the bone in your jaw is preserved, preventing this from happening.

Dental implants are permanent. Unlike removable restorations like dentures, dental implants are not removed at night. They function just like natural teeth do, allowing you to eat and speak normally. They also don’t require any special care other than regular brushing and flossing.

Dental implants in Salem, MA, look and feel like natural teeth. Because they are made from biocompatible materials, they blend seamlessly with your smile. And because they are anchored into your jawbone, they feel like your natural teeth, too!

Dental implants are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. If you want to learn more about dental implants, visit Burba Dental Partners at 129 Highland Ave, Salem, MA, Salem, MA 01970, or call (978) 744-7575.
