Crowns

What is a crown?

A crown or cap is a type of restoration that completely covers the entire tooth. Dr. Burba may recommend a crown when simply filling your tooth would leave it weak and vulnerable to cracking, or when cosmetic improvements to your teeth is the goal. They are permanently cemented over the tooth replacing most of the enamel or outer part of the tooth. A crown surrounds the tooth, reinforcing it, and providing a strong durable biting surface.

What are some reasons that I may need a crown?

  • To replace a large filling that has worn out or cracked, and there isn't enough tooth remaining;
  • To protect a weak tooth from fracturing;
  • To restore a tooth that has already fractured;
  • To cover a dental implant;
  • To cover a poorly shaped or discolored tooth;
  • To protect a tooth that has had a root canal.

Are there different types of crowns?

Yes! Crowns come in many different materials. Depending on the location of your tooth, its color, the amount that shows when you smile, and the position of your surrounding gums, Dr. Burba will choose the material that will work best for your mouth.

How are they done?

Crowns take two visits to make. At the first visit, Dr. Burba will numb the area and shape your tooth to accommodate the crown. He will then make a mold or impression of your tooth. A temporary crown will also be made to cover over your tooth until your next visit. At your second visit Dr.Burba will try in your new permanent crown to check how it fits. When he is sure that it fits all the way down and is sealing your tooth properly, he will permanently cement it on and adjust your bite. Your new tooth is now ready for years of chewing and smiling.
