My dentist is pretty sure I need TMJ treatment, but he doesn’t do those types of treatments. He’s going to recommend someonen for me, but I wondered how to know if I was getting the best dentist for that treatment or just one of his buddies.

I suspect your dentist will be honest with you, because he was honest enough to tell you that you needed something he wasn’t qualified to provide, AND told you he wasn’t the one to treat you.
However, it never hurts to know what to look for in quality dentist treatment. Whenever you are looking for a specific type of treatment. It doesn’t hurt to reasearch where the best training for that is. In the case of TMJ, you want someone who has had post-graduate training specific to this condition. Two great institutes that offer this are The Dawson Academy and the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.
There is nothing wrong with asking a dentist about their qualifications.
