Chewing gum and teeth

My son’s teacher told him it is good for your teeth to chew gum. I’m pretty sure the sugar in gum is bad for your teeth. Can you help solve our argument?

Dennis,

In a way, you’re both right. The sugar in the gum isn’t good for your teeth. However, chewing gum is good for your teeth. Obviously sugar-free gum is best, but as long as you chew the sugared gums even after the sugary taste is gone, there will be benefits.

Chewing gum stimulates your saliva. Your saliva  has enzymes that break up the carbohydrates on your teeth, antibodies that buffer and fight bacteria, and minerals that rebuild your enamel.

I hope you guys figure out who won!
