Finding a Cosmetic Dentist on YELP!

Dentists in my state are opened back up so it is finally time for me to get my smile makeover. I’ve been doing some research and think I’ll save money by getting dental bonding done instead of porcelain veneers, esspecially since I am planning on getting six teeth done. I’m having a bit of trouble deciding between three cosmetic detnists. All of them are rated high on YELP! is there anything in particular I can ask that will set one of them apart from the other two?

Dear Misty,

Pretty brunette with a beautiful smile
Can a beautiful smile be guaranteed?

It is fantastic that you’re doing research before you invest your money. There are a couple of things I want to address that should help you tremendously.

First, is your method of finding a great cosmetic dentist may land you in some trouble. YELP! is a very useful resource, but this is one area where their algorithm isn’t helpful. They don’t seem to distinguish between the types of services a dentist is being rated for.

For instance, a dentist may get a lot of 5-star ratings but it has more to do with their chairside manner than their cosmetic skills. I did an experiment in a large city, by doing a YELP search of my own. Two dentists who were rated in the top 3 cosmetic dentists, don’t even do cosmetic work.

Because cosmetic dentistry isn’t a recognized specialty, it can make it difficult for patients to know who has the skills and training and who hasn’t. Smile makeovers aren’t taught in dental school. Any dentist who is interested in developing that aspect of their practice have to invest a significant amount of time in post-doctoral training.

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) realized the conundrum facing patients looking for someone to do their smile makeover. That is just one of the reasons they began an accreditation program. For a dentist to become accredited, they have to pass stringent exams and provide visual evidence of specific cases they did themselves in order to demonstrate their artistry. You will find that AACD accredited dentists are the best cosmetic dentists in the country.

Porcelain Veneers verses Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is best done on small surfaces, such as a chipped or gapped tooth. This is because it is done completely freehand and is quiet time-consuming.

For this reason, you won’t find many good cosmetic dentists willing to do a complete smile makeover with them. If they did, it would end up actually costing you more, simply because of how much time in the chair it would require as compared to porcelain veneers, which are made out of tiny wafers of porcelain constructed in lab.

Good Dentist—Bad Dentist

I’ve learned a hard lesson I want to pass on to any readers you have. I wanted to get a smile makeover. I called around and found several dentists that did exactly what I wanted right in my area. One of them  (let’s call him bad dentist) was significantly less expensive. It was the exact same procedure so I thought I was getting a good deal. Unfortunately, that is not how it turned out.

The cheaper dentist gave me a smile that was worse than the one I originally went in with. I left in tears. What did the dentist do? He told me it was fine and I was being overly critical.

My husband finally convinced me to go to one of the other dentists to get a second opinion. When I did, the dentist (let’s call him good dentist) said I had a right to be disappointed. He even managed to talk bad dentist into giving me a partial refund.

Then good dentist re-did my smile makeover. Even though it cost me more, I ended up having a smile I am proud to flash everywhere I go.

All that to say, if you want a smile makeover….go to the best dentist possible, even if it costs a little more.  It will be so worth it!

I’m so glad you love your new smile and that you found a great dentist. Your words of advice are spot on.

I will add one thing, because it is sometimes hard for patients, especially new patients, to know who is really the best dentist. You don’t want to just base it on price, because more costly, though it often means more skilled and in demand, doesn’t always mean that. it sometimes means you have a poser.

One almost guaranteed way to get a gorgeous smile makeover, is to go to a cosmetic dentist who is accredited with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Those are among the most skilled cosmetic dentists in the world.

Finding an Expert Cosmetic Dentist

Thank you for you excellent help with my question about porcelain veneers. I realize now I should have done more research on cosmetic dentists. Can you give me some advice on how to find the kind of skilled dentist you talked about?

Carlee O.- Jacksonville, FL

That is a great question. I could tell you ways to spend hours researching training and artistry, but fortunately someone has already taken the time to do that. If you will go to mynewsmile.com website, they have a link called “Find a Cosmetic Dentist”. They list out expert cosmetic dentists from each state. They even have some listings for other countries. The person who runs this site is a highly skilled cosmetic dentist himself, who no longer practices.  He does all the research. Not only do the dentists have to demonstrate their education and training in cosmetic dentistry, but they have to show examples of their work to illustrate their artistry. The standards for being recommended on the site are very high. You’d be safe with anyone of them.

I hope this helps. To read Carlee’s original question, click here.
