For the past few years, Dr. Randy has been given the opportunity to help those who cannot afford proper dental care. Once again, this year, he has teamed up with Great Shape! Inc.’s 1000 Smiles project to bring smiles to the beautiful people on the island of Jamaica!
What is 1000 Smiles?
Great Shape! Inc.’s 1000 Smiles project provides access to free dental care for thousands of people in Jamaica and St. Lucia. The importance of proper oral health goes far beyond just the appearance of your smile. Tooth decay can lead to cavities, disease, low birth rates, unemployment, and even death. Finally, a healthy smile can be the difference between gaining employment and no job at all.
All volunteers of the program are dental professionals and non-dental volunteers who simply have a passion to serve others and want to assist with dental projects and helping others. Volunteers set up temporary dental clinics and provide cleanings, extractions, sealants, surgery, dentures, and oral health education.
The reason 1000 smiles is located in Jamaica is that in rural Jamaica, there is only one dentist for every 100,000 people! Furthermore, there is only one public health eye care provider for every 250,000 people.
More than 350 volunteers join the program every year to provide people with fillings, cleanings, extractions, sealants, dentures, and oral health education in temporary dental clinics and schools. Each week during the project there are some 45 volunteers that make up the team.
Dental professionals and non-dental pro’s (family, friends, or anyone who has a big heart and wants to help) work out of temporary, MASH-style clinics– using some of the best military-grade mobile equipment.
This program continues to empower the children and families of Jamaica and the Caribbean by providing access to education and health care.
Dr. Randy feels extremely blessed and fortunate to be able to help those in need. He couldn’t do it without the love and support from all of his family, friends, staff, and patients!
