It’s so fun to learn about a little something that can make a big impact. Finding a shortcut on a route you regularly drive, learning about a new “cheat” for a video game that gets you to the next level, or even finding a $5 bill left in your winter jacket pocket last year.
NPR recently reported on a “secret” Google tool that will allow you to compare the nutritional value of two foods.
Nutrition Comparison Tool
Launched without a lot of attention in 2013, the Google Nutrition Comparison Tool will provide full nutritional information for two foods in an easy to use, side by side comparison chart.
It looks like this:
To use the tool, all you need to do is enter two foods separated by “vs.” (the period is a must) and Google will produce the comparison table.
For example, enter “carrot vs. broccoli” and you will see:
You can also start the search with “compare” such as “compare carrots and broccoli” to get similar results.
An easy drop down menu under each food allows you to choose how the food is prepared and the quantity. You will then see the entire nutritional chart including fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
In an interview with NPRs The Salt, Google spokesperson Krisztina Radosavljevic-Szilagyi said, “We noticed that people were doing a lot of food and nutrition searches — multi-step searches on one food and another food. These things are often compared to one another, so we thought, why don’t we make it easy?”
Making Your Life Easier
Google’s nutrition tool is yet another in their fleet of specialized services that add value to everyday life.
They also have a restaurant menu feature that will automatically pull up the menu for local restaurants by typing in “show me the menu for_______.” Google has stated that they currently have 75% of U.S. restaurants in their collection.
Google’s team of creative thinkers is always looking for fresh ways to impress those who take the time to play around with the search engine. Try clicking on the home page button “I’m feeling lucky” and see what happens.
Google definitely likes to find ways to make life fun, but it’s especially impressive when their tools can add value to your overall wellness and healthy living.
